A tragic series of earthquakes has struck Myanmar, resulting in a rising death toll. As of the latest reports, the number of deceased has reached 2,719 following the earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.7 and 6.4.

Official Statement from the Military Administration

General Min Aung Hlaing, the head of Myanmar’s military junta, delivered a statement regarding the seismic events that occurred on March 28. “We anticipate that the number of fatalities might exceed 3,000,” he remarked, highlighting the potential for further loss of life.

In addition to the fatalities, the number of injured individuals has climbed to 4,521, while 441 people remain unaccounted for. The situation has prompted a national response, including a week-long period of mourning throughout the country.

The earthquakes, centered near the Sagaing region in central Myanmar, not only wreaked havoc locally but were also felt significantly in neighboring Thailand and China. The destruction is severe, raising concerns about the potential for an increasing death toll.

National Mourning and Remembrance

In response to the disaster, Myanmar’s government has declared a period of national mourning from March 31 to April 6. During this time, flags will be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect for those who have perished in the tragedy.
