Renowned actor Val Kilmer, who had been battling health issues for several years, has passed away at the age of 65. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed the sad news to the New York Times, stating that he succumbed to complications from pneumonia.
Val Kilmer gained fame for his memorable portrayal of ‘Iceman’ in the 1986 classic Top Gun and as the caped crusader in Batman Forever (1995). He also captivated audiences with his performance as Jim Morrison in the 1991 film The Doors.
In 2014, Kilmer faced a challenging diagnosis of throat cancer. He underwent a series of treatments including both radiotherapy and chemotherapy, as well as a tracheostomy to aid his breathing. This procedure unfortunately altered his voice permanently.
In the documentary Val, Kilmer opened up about living with the repercussions of throat cancer, including the need to use an electric voice box to communicate. “My voice sounds worse than I feel,” he admitted. “I can’t speak without closing this hole in my throat.”
The actor also shared the difficulties of eating through a feeding tube, explaining, “One must choose between breathing and eating. It’s an obvious challenge for anyone who sees me.” Kilmer recalled the shock of discovering his illness when he coughed up clotted blood, prompting a hurried trip to the hospital.
