Amid rising tensions, Russia has intensified its military presence in the Baltic Sea, deploying an additional 20 warships, of which four are equipped with Caliber cruise missiles. This strategic move is part of ongoing military exercises that commenced on May 27.
Air and Naval Forces Involved
The exercise features a formidable array of 25 aircraft and surface-to-air missile systems. Approximately 3,000 personnel from Russia’s Baltic and Northern fleets are actively participating in the maneuvers.
Coinciding with Russia’s exercises, NATO is conducting its own operations from the German port city of Rostock. The exercise, known as “Baltops 25,” began on June 3 and is scheduled to continue through June 21. The drills include the testing of HIMARS systems, which have been strategically deployed to Lithuania, a key Baltic state.
In a collaborative effort involving the US Navy and Lithuanian forces, live-fire exercises have been executed, targeting objectives in the Baltic Sea from the city of Klaipeda.
The Largest US Military Exercise in Europe
In parallel, “Defender Europe,” the most extensive US military exercise in Europe, is underway. This large-scale operation involves 25,000 troops from NATO and allied nations, spanning 18 European countries.
Over 5,000 American military personnel have been deployed across Eastern Europe, from Norway to Greece. The latest phase, which began on May 27, includes training exercises in northern Greece, North Macedonia, and Kosovo. “Defender Europe” is set to conclude on June 9.
