Currently, over 99% of users logging into Windows with a Microsoft account refrain from using passwords, favoring alternative security measures like biometrics or Personal Identification Numbers (PINs). This shift highlights the vulnerability of conventional passwords, as Microsoft reports detecting nearly 7,000 password-based cyberattacks every second—an alarming figure that has more than doubled compared to 2023. As cybercriminals refine their techniques, password cracking has become increasingly trivial.
In response, Microsoft aims to supplant passwords with passkeys, which are designed to offer enhanced security. This forward-thinking strategy underscores the company’s dedication to safeguarding user data in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
