In a strategic move to bolster their market presence, specialist managing general agent Phoenix Specialty and global insurer Tokio Marine Kiln (TMK) have announced significant underwriting hires.
Phoenix Specialty has enhanced its team by appointing Timothy Christmas as a construction underwriter. This comes on the heels of substantial growth since the company’s inception in February of the previous year. Christmas transitions from RSA Insurance, where he held the position of senior construction underwriter. With over ten years of experience in construction underwriting, his career includes pivotal roles at Zurich and Allianz UK. Christmas’s expertise spans portfolio management and new business underwriting within the London market.
Initially, Phoenix entered the market with Contractors All Risks and Contractors Plant & Equipment products. The firm plans to diversify its offerings with more specialized construction products while also pursuing international growth.

On the other hand, James Wilson has been named head of special risks at Tokio Marine Kiln, with his appointment set to take effect in the autumn. Wilson will report directly to chief underwriting officer Vivek Syal and will be responsible for expanding TMK’s special risks portfolio.
Wilson brings with him 16 years of experience in political violence, terrorism, credit, and political risk insurance. He joins from The Hartford, where he was the head of political risks and previously oversaw credit and political risk insurance. His professional journey also includes significant roles at Chubb and Catlin.
TMK’s special risks division covers a diverse range of global risks, including political risk, political violence and terrorism, consequential loss, trade disruption, and surety. Wilson’s mission is to bolster TMK’s leading market position across all key lines.
