Homemade Tater Tots Recipe

Ingredients for Tater Tots

  • 900 g potatoes, peeled
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried dill
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup vegetable oil, for frying
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves, for garnish

Instructions: How to Make Tater Tots

  1. Prepare the Potatoes: Place the peeled potatoes in a large saucepan, submerge in cold water, and bring to a boil. Cook until they are halfway tender, approximately 6-7 minutes. Drain them well and allow them to cool completely.
  2. Grate and Dry: Once cool, grate the potatoes. Transfer the grated potatoes to a clean bowl, ensuring you squeeze out as much moisture as possible to keep the mixture dry.
  3. Season the Potatoes: In a separate bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, and dill. Add salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Mix this seasoning into the grated potatoes until well incorporated.
  4. Shape the Tots: Take small portions of the potato mixture and shape them into small rectangular cylinders, reminiscent of classic tater tots.
  5. Fry to Perfection: Heat the vegetable oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully add 5 or 6 tater tots at a time. Fry them until they turn an even golden brown and develop a crisp exterior, about 3-4 minutes.
  6. Drain and Serve: Using a slotted spoon, transfer the cooked tater tots to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil. Serve immediately, garnished with chopped fresh parsley.
