Google has announced an increase in the minimum storage capacity necessary for devices running its upcoming Android 15 mobile operating system. This change means that mobile devices equipped with only 16 GB of internal storage will no longer be eligible for the OS update, even if they meet all other technical prerequisites.
While Android 14 is compatible with devices featuring 16 GB of internal memory, the new Android 15 requirements stipulate that 75% of the 32 GB storage must be allocated to the data partition. This partition is crucial as it holds pre-installed system apps, app data, and essential system files.
Although Google cannot legally mandate manufacturers to avoid producing devices with less than 32 GB of storage if they employ the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) version, this move is likely aimed at enhancing the user experience on entry-level smartphones and tablets distributed worldwide.
Interestingly, the update does not specify the type of internal storage required. Lower-priced devices often come with eMMC flash memory, which is notably slower compared to the advanced UFS 4.0 chips currently available. Despite meeting the new storage criteria, devices with slower memory might still face performance issues, affecting the overall user experience.
