Gallagher Re appoints Dr. Michael Pickel as Executive Chair for DACH and Italy, strengthening leadership in these key regions.
In a strategic move to enhance its regional expertise, Gallagher Re has appointed Dr. Michael Pickel as the Executive Chair for DACH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) and Italy. Dr. Pickel will collaborate closely with leadership teams across these regions, leveraging his extensive industry experience.
With an impressive 36-year career in the reinsurance sector, Dr. Pickel brings a wealth of knowledge and a distinct skill set. His appointment aims to bolster Gallagher Re’s capabilities and strengthen its presence in the German-speaking markets and Italy.
A spokesperson from Gallagher Re expressed enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to have Dr. Pickel join our team. His profound understanding of client needs and regional solutions will be invaluable to our growth in these markets.”
Dr. Pickel’s career spans 25 years at Hannover Rück SE and its subsidiary, E+S Rückversicherung AG, dedicated to the group’s German business. After announcing his retirement in 2024, he was succeeded by Thorsten Steinmann on the Executive Board.
Joining Hannover Re and E+S Rück in 2000 from Gerling Globale Rückversicherungs-AG in Cologne, Germany, Dr. Pickel has held numerous leadership roles. His last position involved overseeing operations in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Latin America, the Iberian Peninsula, and the Middle East, along with managing Group Legal Services.
Globally, Dr. Pickel is responsible for Run-Off Solutions and Agricultural Risks. His board memberships include Delvag Versicherungs-AG, where he served for nearly nine years, and the Barmenia Insurance Advisory Board, where he contributed for almost six years.
