ToggleEuropean Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica and Jordanian Minister for International Cooperation Zeina Toukan announced on Monday that the European Union and Jordan will organize an investment conference in Amman on April 21. The event will bring together European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and King Abdullah II of Jordan. Its purpose is to foster stronger links between European and Jordanian businesses and investors by supporting collaboration on projects beneficial to both sides.
Toukan noted on Monday that, in the coming weeks, delegations would visit several European capitals to promote the Jordan–EU Investment Conference. Jordan remains a crucial partner for EU economic diplomacy in the Middle East, a region where Brussels aims to enhance its political influence as a stabilizing presence following the conflicts in Syria and Gaza. The country is also distinguished by its skilled workforce, which European partners regard as a vital asset. During her remarks, Šuica emphasized that Jordan provides a stable and competitive environment for investment and reaffirmed the EU’s dedication to the partnership.
In January last year, the EU pledged €3 billion in loans and investments for the period 2025–2027, focused primarily on trade, energy, security, and migration. Of this amount, €1.4 billion is allocated for economic investments through EU financial mechanisms, creating the main framework for the upcoming conference in April.
During their press meeting, both leaders highlighted several key projects to be addressed, including initiatives that are either already under way or newly proposed with support from the EU and European member states. Among them is the Aqaba–Amman Water Desalination Project, backed by over €1.5 billion mobilized to strengthen water security. They also referred to the establishment of the Aqaba Digital Hub and the extension of the MEDUSA submarine cable to Jordan. This cable will connect Northern Africa with Cyprus, France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain, with the goal of boosting internet speeds for North African universities by up to 200 times.
Another major initiative is the creation of the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), whose initial projects are planned for presentation in early 2026. The IMEC aims to develop transport routes, digital frameworks, and logistics centers to enable seamless and efficient trade across participating regions. The corridor is expected to pass through Jordan, solidifying the country’s strategic role in regional connectivity.
