Amazon’s Theatrical Vision Unveiled

After a decade of exploring theatrical movie releases, Amazon is poised to make a significant impact at this week’s annual theater owners’ convention. The tech giant is investing millions to host a star-studded lineup featuring Ryan Gosling, Ben Affleck, and Chris Hemsworth. This marks Amazon’s debut in such a prominent role at the event.

The focus is clear: demonstrate Amazon MGM Studios’ commitment to launching approximately 14 major films annually across theaters domestically and globally. This initiative aligns with Amazon’s strategic shift post its acquisition of MGM in 2022 for $8.5 billion, gaining access to the studio’s extensive library.

  • Previously, Amazon released 5-8 films theatrically without a defined strategy for their theater duration before streaming on Prime Video.
  • The film “Air”, featuring Affleck and Matt Damon, enjoyed a 37-day exclusive run in theaters.
  • “Red One,” starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, transitioned to Prime Video shortly after its cinematic debut.

With the ambitious release of 14 films annually, Amazon aims to compete with major studios in both volume and variety, with most films enjoying a 45-day theatrical window before moving to pay-per-view and eventually Prime.

This evolution comes amidst Amazon’s internal changes. Jennifer Salke, who led Amazon Studios’ film and TV operations for seven years, unexpectedly departed last week, leaving many within the company surprised. As the CinemaCon conference unfolds, attention will turn to Courtenay Valenti, head of Amazon MGM films, who will articulate the company’s theatrical aspirations.

“We have been discussing our theatrical slate and the company’s commitment to cinema for nearly two years,” remarked Ms. Valenti, 61, in an interview. “Finally, we have the chance to show, not just tell.”
