Amazon has announced that Alexa Plus, its cutting-edge AI-driven virtual assistant unveiled in February, has now amassed 100,000 users. While this figure represents a modest portion of the 600 million Alexa devices deployed globally, it signifies a crucial step in the company’s strategy for gradual adoption. Unlike its predecessor, the classic Alexa, Alexa Plus is designed to engage users in natural, conversational interactions rather than relying solely on predefined responses.
The advanced assistant, powered by generative AI, seeks to facilitate more seamless and context-aware dialogues, akin to what users experience with ChatGPT or Google Gemini’s voice features. However, it is worth noting that not all promised features are currently available.
During its launch in February, Alexa Plus showcased a range of sophisticated capabilities, such as interacting with third-party applications, crafting unique bedtime stories for children, and offering gift suggestions. Yet, the present version falls short of integrating these functionalities, notably lacking partnerships with services like GrubHub, which impacts the overall user experience.
Amazon’s CEO, Andy Jassy, has hinted at introducing “much more functionality” for Alexa Plus in the upcoming months, though he hasn’t provided a specific timeline. He also underscored the need to enhance the accuracy of Nova Act, the AI system powering Alexa Plus, which currently succeeds in multi-step tasks with 30 to 60 percent accuracy. The company’s goal is to boost this to 90 percent.
While Amazon is advancing its phased rollout of Alexa Plus, it appears to be outpacing Apple’s efforts to launch a new Siri with LLM (large language model) capabilities. Apple CEO Tim Cook mentioned during a recent earnings call that the new Siri’s development will take “a little more time”. Both technology giants face the significant challenge of integrating AI models with external applications to make them actionable.
