Alvaro Uribe voices concerns over government actions as assassination threats loom, sparking intense political discourse.
Former President Alvaro Uribe has publicly criticized the current government for its handling of security issues, while simultaneously highlighting ongoing threats against his life. In a recent post on his social media account, Uribe pointed out the serious nature of a recent armed attack on Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, which took place on June 8.
Uribe expressed frustration, stating, “While Miguel Uribe fights for his life, the government seems preoccupied with other matters. They propose agreements to prevent new massacres, yet international intelligence has informed me of another assassination plot against me.”
In response to these allegations, Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez Suarez took to social media to announce a significant reward for information leading to the prevention of potential assassination attempts on political figures. He stated that a reward of up to 240 thousand dollars, equivalent to approximately 1 billion Colombian pesos, would be offered for credible intelligence.
Suarez emphasized, “Security measures have been heightened to the maximum level. A reward will be given to those who provide accurate and timely information that enables us to recognize and neutralize any threat to our political leaders in advance. An attack on a political leader, regardless of ideology or party affiliation, is a direct attack on our democracy.”
Alvaro Uribe, who led Colombia as president for two consecutive terms from 2002 to 2010, has previously survived attempts on his life through bomb attacks.
