Yoko Taro, renowned for his unique direction of the Nier series, has recently shared his perspective on the rapidly advancing artificial intelligence technology and its potential impact on game development. In a candid interview with Famitsu, while promoting his latest venture, Hundred Line, Taro reflected on how AI could reshape creative industries in the coming decades.
“I believe AI will render all game creators redundant,” Taro remarked. “In fifty years, the role of game creators might become akin to that of ancient troubadours. Soon, we will transition from mimicking our favorite creators’ styles to an era where AI can directly generate the narratives we cherish. By analyzing user preferences, AI will adeptly craft story paths that captivate readers.”
These thoughts are echoed by Daniel Vávra, director of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, who expressed optimism that AI could expedite the game development process. Vávra, brimming with ideas but constrained by time, humorously added, “I have more ideas than time,” hinting at AI’s potential to alleviate this constraint.
It’s intriguing to hear such views from Yoko Taro, known for his unconventional creativity. While predicting if AI could replicate the distinctiveness of NieR in fifty years remains speculative, one can only hope it doesn’t lead to a proliferation of monotonous content, thereby stifling originality.
