Enhanced Group Chat Experience
WhatsApp now displays a real-time Online indicator in group chats, showing the number of active participants beneath the group name. For users who feel overwhelmed by group notifications, there’s a new option to customize alerts. Users can opt to receive all notifications or just Highlights, which include @mentions, replies, and messages from saved contacts.
Introducing Activity Updates
The Events feature, previously exclusive to groups, is now available in one-on-one chats. Users can create events, indicate participation status as Maybe, invite contacts, and pin events directly within chats.
Interactive Emoticons
Enhancing communication, WhatsApp introduces tappable emoticons. When someone reacts to a message, users can tap the reaction to add their own or join in with the existing emoji.
Video Call Enhancements
Video calling sees significant improvements, with a new connection system that minimizes freezing and call drops. WhatsApp has optimized its routing system for the best connection paths and enhanced bandwidth detection to enable HD video quality when possible.
iPhone-Specific Innovations
iPhone users benefit from unique features like pinch-to-zoom during video calls and document scanning directly from the attachment menu. Additionally, users can now designate WhatsApp as the default messaging and calling app on their iPhones.
Channel-Specific Enhancements
For Channels, WhatsApp equips admins with tools to record and share short videos up to 60 seconds, generate unique QR codes for easy channel sharing, and provide transcripts of voice messages for followers unable to listen to audio updates.
These updates are being rolled out to both iPhone and Android users, promising a more robust and engaging messaging experience.
