Understanding What Makes Air Travel Uncomfortable and How Airlines Can Help

Challenges Faced by Anxious Flyers

A recent survey highlights the various factors that can make air travel uncomfortable for nervous flyers, ranging from cabin temperature to disruptive fellow passengers. Wider seats, meditation apps, and calming music are among the solutions that may alleviate passenger apprehension. Choosing the right airline can be crucial. Luggage storage company Bounce conducted an analysis of safety ratings and in-flight services to identify the best airlines for anxious travellers. Notably, three European airlines made it to the top 10.

Key Factors Contributing to Discomfort

Bounce surveyed over 2,000 travellers to pinpoint the elements that most negatively impact passenger comfort. More than half of the respondents identified turbulence and noisy children as the primary sources of discomfort, a sentiment that surpasses those troubled by cramped airplane restrooms. Unassigned seating arrangements cause anxiety for nearly 30% of passengers, with women more likely to be affected than men. While only one in five passengers are perturbed by excessive alcohol consumption, this concern tends to increase with age.

Top Airlines for Anxious Passengers

Using survey data, Bounce evaluated airlines on various criteria that can affect passenger comfort, such as Skytrax review scores, seat dimensions, and available passenger support. Singapore Airlines emerged as the leader, boasting perfect review and safety scores. It offers the widest economy class seats in the top 10, measuring 47cm, providing additional comfort for long-haul flights. While it lacks a dedicated nervous flyer support program, it offers in-flight meditation playlists that include nature sounds and soothing music.

Korean Air ranked second, offering a spacious economy seat pitch of 82.5cm. It matched Singapore Airlines in both safety and review ratings. Cathay Pacific, based in Hong Kong, completed the top three. Though it doesn’t have a specific program for nervous flyers, it offers relaxation playlists and partners with the mental health app Headspace to provide meditation support.

Leading European Airlines for Nervous Flyers

EasyJet, based at London Luton Airport, secured the sixth spot. With a seat width just behind Singapore Airlines at 45cm, it excels in supporting nervous travellers through its Fearless Flyer course, available online. British Airways ranked ninth, offering a 3/5 review score but a perfect safety rating. Its Flying with Confidence courses are held globally and run by experienced pilots and cabin crew, supported by a clinical psychologist. SWISS rounds off the list in 10th place, featuring generous economy seat dimensions and a 4/5 review score. While it lacks a specific support program, it provides access to the Headspace app for meditation and sleep support.

Enhancing Comfort for Air Travelers

Beyond these features, airlines can adopt additional strategies to enhance passenger comfort, as the report suggests. According to the survey, most passengers prioritize friendly cabin crew and seat selection over physical amenities like noise-canceling headphones or blankets. Wi-Fi availability and in-seat power are particularly valued by younger travellers.
