State Farm has reported disbursing $2.45 billion in response to 12,200 claims related to the devastating wildfires that swept through Los Angeles in January. As the largest provider of homeowner and personal auto insurance in California, State Farm covers approximately 250,000 homes and 880,000 vehicles within Los Angeles County.
Comprehensive Catastrophe Response
The company swiftly activated its full catastrophe response teams to handle the influx of claims after the fires erupted on January 7, causing extensive damage throughout the region. Initially, State Farm had projected that direct losses would hit $7.6 billion. However, after accounting for reinsurance, the retained losses might be around $212 million, as noted by AM Best.
Insurance Rate Adjustments
In the wake of these events, California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara sanctioned State Farm General’s request for a provisional property insurance rate increase of between 21.8% and 38%. This approval was contingent upon several conditions, including a temporary moratorium on policy nonrenewals and cancellations in the state until the end of 2025.
Lara also urged the parent company, State Farm, to inject $500 million in capital into its California subsidiary. He emphasized that the rate hikes would remain effective only if the company substantiates its emergency rate filing with adequate data at a public hearing scheduled for April 8 before an administrative law judge.
In 2024, State Farm revealed significant financial figures shaped by various claims events. The company reported an underwriting loss exceeding $6 billion, marking a considerable improvement from the $14 billion loss noted in 2023. Catastrophic events from the previous year significantly influenced this, with State Farm disbursing around $11.4 billion for catastrophe-related claims over the year.
By March, the insurance payouts related to the California wildfires had surpassed $12 billion, nearly doubling from the $6.9 billion reported in February.
