The race in memory technology is intensifying as Chinese memory manufacturer CXMT makes significant strides in its development. The company has reportedly finalized the development phase of LPDDR5X RAM, a move that has not gone unnoticed by industry leaders.
In response, South Korean tech giant Samsung has ramped up its own efforts, fast-tracking the development of LPDDR6 RAM chips. These next-generation chips promise to deliver higher bandwidth while operating with increased energy efficiency, setting a new standard in memory technology.
CXMT began its LPDDR6 development earlier this year, with expectations to commence full-scale production by 2026. Meanwhile, Samsung is pushing the envelope by utilizing an advanced 1c DRAM process for its LPDDR6 production, positioning itself to maintain a competitive edge.
LPDDR6 RAM is anticipated to revolutionize multiple sectors, including artificial intelligence, mobile computing, robotics, and autonomous vehicles. The progression in DRAM technology, marked by stages from ‘1x’ to ‘1c’, continues to enhance both performance and efficiency.
Qualcomm is reported to be the first major client set to integrate Samsung’s LPDDR6 RAM into its products. The upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 processor is expected to support this cutting-edge technology, with its unveiling anticipated during the Snapdragon Summit on September 23rd.
While Qualcomm is the initial customer, the advantages offered by LPDDR6 RAM suggest that other companies are likely to follow suit. This strategic advancement could give Samsung a substantial lead over CXMT in the competitive memory chip market.
