Qualcomm’s inaugural Snapdragon X series processors for laptops fell short of the industry’s high expectations. However, the arrival of the second-generation Snapdragon X2 chips marks a promising turnaround. Recent insights suggest that these new processors could deliver an impressive 22 percent performance boost, potentially rivaling AMD and Intel.
According to reputable sources, particularly the Chinese leaker Fixed Focus Digital, the Snapdragon X Elite 2—anticipated to be the flagship of the Snapdragon X2 lineup—will feature a minimum boost frequency of 4.4 GHz. This development signifies a marked improvement over the previous generation’s 4.3 GHz threshold, indicating Qualcomm’s strategic enhancement in processing speeds.
While the maximum frequency remains undisclosed, speculation suggests that it could soar even higher for demanding tasks. This projected 18 to 22 percent performance increase stems not only from the uplifted clock speeds but also from advancements in manufacturing processes.
The first-generation Snapdragon X Elite leveraged TSMC’s N4P technology. However, the Snapdragon X2 might transition to the more sophisticated N3P or N2P nodes. These advanced processes promise notable improvements in both speed and energy efficiency. However, if the N2P node is adopted, the release might be deferred to 2026.
Reports indicate that the Snapdragon X2 processors completed their development phase by mid-2024 under the code name Project Glymur. Testing reportedly concluded between July and August. Consequently, there is anticipation that laptops powered by the X2 series will debut in 2025, setting a new benchmark in laptop processing technology.
