To purchase a product, users are redirected via an external link to the vendor’s site. However, this requirement may evolve as OpenAI is currently in discussions with Shopify. Upon finalizing this partnership, users might soon complete purchases directly through ChatGPT, eliminating the need for external links.

Despite ChatGPT’s immense popularity, OpenAI has faced challenges in capitalizing on this success. The introduction of shopping capabilities and product advertisements could open a lucrative revenue stream for the company. Since OpenAI controls which results ChatGPT displays during searches, it possesses a powerful platform ripe for generating advertising revenue.

Currently, OpenAI states that it does not take a share of sales and emphasizes that product visibility is determined by an algorithm that considers factors like price, ratings, and technical specifications. In a previous statement, CEO Sam Altman mentioned the possibility of incorporating advertisements in the future, asserting this would not influence the ranking of results. Whether Altman will adhere to this promise remains to be seen.
