OmniVision has introduced a groundbreaking 1-inch CMOS sensor designed for premium smartphones, named the OV50X. This sensor is touted to deliver the highest dynamic range and cinematic video quality available in the industry.
The OV50X boasts an impressive resolution of 50 MP and features large 1.6 µm pixels. It supports 12.5 MP video capture at a smooth 180 fps by combining four pixels, alongside three-channel HDR recording at 60 fps and 8K video capabilities.
OmniVision asserts that this sensor achieves a dynamic range of close to 110 dB, the highest feasible for smartphones. Its TheiaCel technology enables high dynamic range without the need for multiple exposures, facilitating real-time previews and video capture. The OV50X can also perform 8K video recording utilizing Dual Analog Gain (DAG) HDR, a technique that applies varying gain levels to highlight detail in both shadows and bright areas, merging them for an HDR result. This reduces the distortion often associated with multi-frame HDR methods.
An alternative HDR method, Dual Conversion Gain (DCG), is also supported by the sensor. The LOFIC (lateral overflow integration capacitor) component of TheiaCel enhances HDR performance while minimizing flicker from LED lights such as billboards and traffic signals.
The OV50X further offers in-sensor zoom for added versatility in smartphone photography. It employs Quad Phase Detection (QPD) [autofocus] with 100% coverage, ensuring rapid and reliable focus lock.
Currently, the OmniVision OV50X is undergoing evaluation by manufacturers, with mass production anticipated to commence in the third quarter of 2025. Smartphones featuring this innovative sensor could be available by the end of that year.
