Microsoft is developing an exciting new feature known as “Cross Device Resume”, aimed at enhancing the user experience in Windows 11 by enabling seamless transitions between devices. This feature will allow users to effortlessly switch apps from their phones to their PCs with a single click, mirroring the functionality of Apple’s Handoff in macOS.
The concept was unveiled at the Microsoft Build 2025 event, where developers were shown a demonstration involving Spotify. The demo illustrated how an active Spotify session on a mobile device could seamlessly continue on a PC, picking up precisely where it was left off.
According to Aakash Varshney, a Microsoft product manager, when an application is active on a tablet or smartphone, a distinctive badge will appear just above the application’s icon on the Windows taskbar. This badge, when clicked, will present the user with an option to resume the app’s activity on their PC, instantly transitioning the session to the larger screen.
Microsoft previously explored a similar concept in Windows 10 through a project known as Project Rome. This initiative was designed to enable developers to create applications capable of operating across various devices, facilitating a fluid user experience as individuals switched between their gadgets. However, it did not gain significant traction at the time.
With advancements in technology and increased user expectations, there is optimism that this innovative feature will gain widespread adoption, providing users with a more integrated and efficient computing experience.
