Microsoft has recently unveiled a browser-based demo of the iconic video game Quake II, powered by their cutting-edge Muse AI models. This initiative is part of the company’s broader vision, termed Copilot for Gaming, which aims to showcase the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in the realms of game development and player interaction.
The Muse model presents a revolutionary approach by creating a new gaming experience through learning from visual data and gameplay logs. Unlike traditional AI systems that simulate gameplay, Muse allows users to directly interact with it using a keyboard or controller, providing immediate feedback on their commands. Notably, this version of Quake II includes a level entirely reimagined by Muse.
Despite its innovative capabilities, the demo does present certain limitations. Users may encounter blurry enemies, simplistic interactions, and limited gameplay. A significant constraint is the model’s object persistence, where objects that exit the camera’s view for merely 0.9 seconds are often forgotten by the AI.
Earlier Muse promotional videos operated at 10 FPS with a resolution of 300 x 180. However, this new demo advances to a 640 x 360 resolution and delivers a more playable frame rate. While the current experience is still limited, it offers a promising glimpse into future gaming possibilities. Microsoft envisions Muse as a prototyping tool for developers, leveraging AI’s ability to comprehend old games and facilitate their adaptation to modern platforms.
Initially, Muse training commenced with Microsoft titles such as Bleeding Edge. The current Quake II demo indicates that the model is now being trained with a broader range of games. This development suggests that similar short AI-powered gaming experiences will continue to emerge under the Copilot Labs banner.
