Microsoft has made a pivotal decision affecting Windows 10 users. Previously, the tech giant had announced that support for Windows 10 would cease on 14 October 2025, along with the end of updates for Microsoft 365 (Office) applications on the same date. However, in a recent turn of events, Microsoft has decided to extend the security updates for Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 until 2028.
This change, which was quietly unveiled in an updated support article last week, is intended to facilitate a secure transition to Windows 11. Despite this, the end-of-support date for Windows 10 itself remains unchanged, set for 14 October 2025. This announcement holds particular significance for corporate users, who heavily rely on these applications for their daily operations.
In a blog post from January, Microsoft had initially clarified that Office applications would no longer receive support on Windows 10 past 2025. Although the support window for Microsoft 365 applications has been extended to 2028, Microsoft continues to advocate for a shift towards Windows 11. The company highlights potential long-term issues related to performance and reliability as key motivators for this transition.
The recent decision is not limited to Microsoft 365 users. Individual users who prefer to stick with Windows 10 will have the option to purchase paid security updates for the first time. Those seeking an extra year of security support can do so for a fee of $30. Meanwhile, corporate customers can access extended support packages that cover up to three additional years.
