Under the Los Angeles night sky, a crowd of film and art aficionados gathered at the James Fuentes Gallery to celebrate the opening of “Some More Collages”, marking Jim Jarmusch’s debut solo exhibition in the city. The bustling Saturday evening was alive with animated conversations echoing off the gallery’s concrete floors, as attendees enjoyed wine and seltzer while eagerly attempting to capture moments with Mr. Jarmusch, the renowned New York filmmaker and indie icon.
Adorning the gallery walls were 28 of Jarmusch’s small, minimalist newsprint collages, accompanied by three larger lithograph edition prints. While Jarmusch doesn’t discriminate against the newspapers he uses for his collages, The New York Times often finds its way into his creative process. Scarlet Sobranie, 68, shared her admiration, stating, “I find Jim to be extremely original and innovative. He has a huge fan base here in Los Angeles.”
At 72, Jim Jarmusch boasts an impressive repertoire with over a dozen films, such as “Down by Law” (1986) and “Coffee and Cigarettes” (2003), which often explore the serendipitous encounters of strangers in various urban landscapes. Beyond his cinematic achievements, Jarmusch has ventured into music, poetry, and visual arts, crafting hundreds of unique collages. Amidst a room teeming with enthusiasts, his presence was quietly magnetic, made unmistakable by his distinctive white hair.
In 2021, Jarmusch first revealed his surrealist collages to the public with his initial solo exhibition at the James Fuentes Gallery in New York, inviting art lovers into his visual world.
