Istanbul Airport Pioneers Triple Independent Runway Operations in Europe

Discover how Istanbul Airport leads Europe with its pioneering triple independent runway operations, enhancing efficiency and capacity.

Discover how Istanbul Airport leads Europe with its pioneering triple

Today marks a significant milestone for Istanbul Airport as it becomes the first airport in Europe to implement simultaneous triple independent runway operations. This advanced aviation technology, previously exclusive to airports in the United States, allows three aircraft to land or take off concurrently on entirely independent runways.

What Does the Triple Independent Parallel Runway Achieve?

The introduction of the triple independent parallel runway is set to elevate the capacity of Istanbul Airport, enhancing the efficiency of air traffic management. This innovation will lead to considerable fuel savings by reducing both the airborne waiting time and taxiing duration for aircraft. Initially, when Istanbul Airport commenced operations, the average taxi time stood at approximately 22 minutes. However, this has been successfully reduced to 14 minutes, and with the new system, it is expected to decrease further to between 10 and 12 minutes.

What Does the Triple Independent Parallel Runway Achieve?

Europe’s Busiest Airport

According to EUROCONTROL statistics, Istanbul Airport emerged as the busiest airport in Europe, averaging 1,401 flights daily in 2024. The enhancement of the simultaneous triple independent runway feature will play a pivotal role in maintaining this level of traffic both safely and efficiently. With an annual passenger capacity of 90 million, the airport catered to 80.1 million passengers last year. Upon completion of all runways and terminals, the annual passenger capacity is projected to soar to 200 million.
