For years, foldable smartphone screens have captured the market’s attention, but the realm of e-book readers remained untouched by this innovation—until now. The Chinese company Readmo has unveiled the MooInk V, marking the debut of the world’s first foldable e-book reader with an e-ink display.

Readmo collaborated with E Ink for nearly a decade to create an electronic paper display capable of enduring over 200,000 folds. The MooInk V is equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen utilizing E Ink’s Gallery 3 technology. This screen can uniquely render over 50,000 colors at an impressive resolution of 300 ppi. This technological leap positions it well ahead of the Kindle Colorsoft, which is limited to 4096 colors through its color filter.

Previously, while E Ink had demonstrated prototypes of foldable e-readers, the challenge lay in the thickness of the screen technology compared to OLED panels. Designing a reliable hinge and a durable screen for everyday use proved difficult. It was this challenge that delayed the arrival of foldable e-book readers until the advent of the MooInk V.
The MooInk V boasts a lightweight and sturdy build, crafted from an aluminum-magnesium alloy, and weighs just 225 grams. Although the device’s dimensions have not been disclosed, its compact size rivals that of a conventional book, easily fitting into a pocket for on-the-go convenience.
As of now, Readmo has yet to release information regarding the MooInk V’s pricing and availability.
