Insurance Industry Faces Growing Protection Gaps by 2030

The insurance sector is poised to confront expanding protection gaps across all domains by 2030, as insurers contend with the challenges of unsustainable growth driven by rate increases, according to an insightful report by Bain & Company, a renowned management consultancy.

The report, titled “Bridging the Protection Gap: Affordability, Access, and Risk Prevention,” underscores the mounting difficulties in accurately pricing risks. These challenges are exacerbated by the rising frequency of natural disasters, escalating cyber threats, and a declining interest in life insurance, especially among younger demographics.

Bain’s analysis reveals that by 2030, insurance coverage will only account for 25%–33% of losses from natural disasters, with mortality coverage potentially dropping below 50%. Investor confidence in US insurers’ growth prospects is declining, whereas emerging markets present a more promising future for life insurance.

In the United States, concerns over long-term earnings growth have led to reduced valuations for life insurers, suggesting either diminishing profitability or potential undisclosed losses within existing policies. Property and casualty (P&C) insurers face similar predicaments, with skepticism about whether recent price hikes are sustainable amidst potentially rising claims.

A major challenge is the surge in cyber risks in our increasingly digital world. Bain cautions that by 2030, global damages from ransomware could surpass $250 billion, posing a threat too large for individual insurers to manage alone.

Despite these hurdles, the report identifies opportunities fueled by technological advancements. The rapid growth of unstructured data and the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) are revolutionizing the insurance landscape, offering new avenues to enhance affordability and accessibility.

Bain anticipates that AI-driven innovations could boost revenue by 10%–15%, achieve up to 30% in operational cost savings, and reduce P&C leakages—losses from fraud, inefficiencies, or errors in claims processing—by 30%–50%.

The report also delves into the evolving impact of climate change on insurance risk models, the challenges posed by electric and autonomous vehicles, and strategies to tackle the burgeoning retirement income gap. While insurers face increasing risks, those that embrace technology and innovation may discover new paths to sustainable growth.

“Bolstered by unsustainable tailwinds, insurance companies find themselves at a critical juncture,” commented Sean O’Neill, head of Bain’s global Insurance practice. “In recent years, we’ve observed rate hikes in the property and casualty sector and interest-rate-driven annuity sales in the life sector. Although capital and balance sheets remain relatively strong, several challenges have emerged, putting profitability under pressure across many insurance lines. Insurers must act proactively to navigate these impacts.”

“Risk prevention is becoming increasingly crucial throughout the insurance sector,” added Andrew Schwedel, partner in Bain’s Insurance practice. “Risks associated with catastrophic cyber events will need to be shared, requiring expansion of public-private partnerships to encourage prevention. Risk-sharing will likely necessitate added capacity from excess and surplus carriers, reinsurers, and alternative capital providers.”
