Google’s Updated Gmail iOS App with Material Design 3

Google’s Redesign of Gmail for iOS

Google has embarked on a significant redesign of its Gmail app for iOS, incorporating Material Design 3 principles. Announced recently, this refreshed interface will be rolled out to all Google Workspace users and individuals with personal Google accounts beginning this week.

Material Design 3, also referred to as Material You, debuted in 2021 alongside the Android 12 update. This design ethos emphasizes enhanced animation and entry-level visual customization, enabling users to adjust line thickness, the dimensions of UI elements, and more.

Gradual Implementation and New Features

Google has been progressively updating Gmail’s web version and other applications with this modern design language. However, it took four years for the iPhone version to receive these enhancements. Last year, Google introduced a new dark theme influenced by Material You to the web version of Google Calendar.

Moreover, a feature previously exclusive to Android is now being introduced to iPhone users. Google Workspace clients and those with personal accounts can now create and edit birthday events directly within the Gmail app on iOS.

Enhanced Functionality and Updates

The Gemini side panel in Gmail for both Android and iOS is being updated to include image creation capabilities. Previously accessible only on the web, users can now save, copy, or insert the AI-generated images directly into a draft.

Google has confirmed that this image creation feature is being made available to select Workspace tiers, including Business Starter/Standard/Plus, Enterprise Starter/Standard/Plus, Google One AI Premium, and Gemini add-ons.

Additionally, draggable dividers are now accessible to Gmail and Google Chat users on large-screen Android devices. In two-pane mode, users can switch between a single-pane and a two-pane layout while adjusting the width of each pane to their preference.

Elsewhere, Google’s video editing tool, Vids, is receiving an update, allowing users to adjust the timeline’s height. This enhancement helps display more objects when managing timing for individual scenes.
