EA’s Workforce Reduction and Project Cancellations

In a significant move last year, Electronic Arts (EA) decided to streamline its operations, resulting in a reduction of its workforce by around five percent. This decision impacted approximately 670 employees. Recent reports indicate that EA has now laid off an additional 300 employees and has also terminated several projects across its development studios. Among these is a project speculated to be the latest in the Titanfall series.

Impact on Respawn Entertainment

The cuts have notably affected Respawn Entertainment, the creative force behind popular titles such as Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi. Out of the 300 employees let go, 100 were from Respawn, making it one of the most affected studios by EA’s restructuring strategy.

In an official statement, Respawn expressed that the restructuring has especially impacted the Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi development teams. The studio emphasized that these decisions were not made lightly and conveyed deep gratitude to all those who have contributed to their projects to date. Additionally, Respawn confirmed the cancellation of two projects that were still in the nascent stages of planning.

Cancelled Projects and Ongoing Developments

According to Bloomberg, one of the shelved projects was internally referred to as R7, an extraction shooter that was to be set within the Titanfall universe. This comes on the heels of EA’s cancellation of a previous Titanfall-related project, Titanfall Legends, two years prior.

Despite these setbacks, Respawn has reassured fans that development on the new Star Wars Jedi game is still actively progressing. The studio remains committed to delivering high-quality gaming experiences even amidst these challenging times.
