Chinese automotive giant BYD is carving a unique path in the electric and hybrid vehicle market with distinct pricing strategies across different regions. While its home market in China witnesses significant discounts, the Turkish market experiences notable price increases for identical models, sparking both intrigue and criticism among consumers.
As the 2025 model year approaches, BYD introduces substantial innovations across its lineup. Models like the Seal U, Dolphin, and Atto 3 showcase remarkable advancements in technical specifications and design. The inclusion of the advanced DiPilot 100 driving assistance systems as standard in these vehicles highlights BYD’s commitment to technological progress. Additionally, the Dolphin and Atto 3 models sport significant visual redesigns.
In China, BYD has launched an aggressive discount initiative, offering reductions of up to 20% to clear out inventory of older models before the end of April. This move has been well-received by local consumers, eager to take advantage of these lowered prices.
Conversely, in the Turkish market, BYD has implemented a series of price hikes for models with older specifications. The Dolphin and Atto 3 have experienced two price increases within a single month. As a result, the Dolphin now exceeds the 1.4 million TL mark, while the Atto 3 surpasses 1.6 million TL. The popular hybrid model, the Seal U DM-i, has seen its price rise above 2 million TL, despite being subject to a 30% SCT rate.
Interestingly, the same Seal U DM-i hybrid model retails for approximately $20,000 in China. Even accounting for the exchange rate and taxation, such high prices in Turkey have drawn criticism from automotive consumers. While the impact of the SCT is undeniable, the persistent price increases amid outdated vehicle equipment levels are a cause for concern.
BYD’s pricing strategy in Turkey could significantly influence its future sales trajectory in the region. The market eagerly anticipates the arrival of the new generation models and the pricing strategy BYD will adopt upon their introduction.
