Boston Dynamics, a trailblazer in robotic technology, continues to break new ground with its latest development for the humanoid robot, Atlas. The company has unveiled a sophisticated perception system, enabling the robot to autonomously navigate and perform intricate tasks by actively understanding its environment.
Renowned for its acrobatic prowess, Atlas has now been equipped with a cutting-edge “perception” system, elevating its ability to function independently in real-world settings. This innovative system endows Atlas with 3D spatial awareness and real-time object tracking, allowing it to operate efficiently in industrial environments, even in areas that are cluttered, dimly lit, or variably colored.
Atlas begins its environmental assessment using a 2D object detection system, which identifies surrounding objects and assigns bounding boxes and key points. This capability is particularly beneficial when interacting with storage systems of various shapes and sizes, as Atlas can pinpoint even the smallest shelf compartments using internal and external key points.
The data collected is then processed by the 3D positioning system, comparing observed key points with pre-established models to ascertain the robot’s position relative to objects. Remarkably, even with obscured key points or deceptive angles, the system can accurately determine object poses, demonstrating a level of precision surpassing human perception.
During object manipulation, Atlas not only transports items but also continuously tracks them. The SuperTracker system integrates visual, kinetic, and force data to promptly identify if a part has slipped or moved out of view. This system relies on pose estimation algorithms that match real-world images with CAD models, delivering millimeter-level accuracy.
For these processes to function seamlessly, precise calibration between Atlas’s physical model and its camera systems is crucial. Boston Dynamics has devised a specialized calibration infrastructure to maintain this alignment despite temperature changes, component wear, or manufacturing variances. This ensures that Atlas is fully aware and in control of both “what it sees” and “what it does”, down to the minutest detail.
Boston Dynamics asserts that these advancements are merely the initial steps. The company aims to integrate visual perception and physical movement into a unified core model, enabling robots to simultaneously perceive, decide, and act, much like humans.
