Among the most exciting announcements, Apple is expected to unveil a significant design transformation across its operating systems. The upcoming iOS 26 will introduce the most substantial design refresh since iOS 7, marking a pivotal evolution in Apple’s design language. This redesign is expected to extend to all Apple devices, ensuring seamless compatibility.
The next iteration for Apple Watches will be watchOS 26, skipping the sequential naming of watchOS 12. This renaming aligns with Apple’s strategy to synchronize its software updates with the release cycle spanning from September 2025 to September 2026. Alongside watchOS 26, we anticipate the unveiling of iPadOS 26, macOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26.
Apple is poised to integrate the design innovation of iOS 26 into Apple Watch, albeit the changes in watchOS may not be as pronounced as those in iOS. The hallmark of iOS 26 will be a design ethos termed “Solarium”, characterized by a glass-like aesthetic inspired by visionOS. The shift encompasses translucent elements reminiscent of frosted glass, including buttons, search interfaces, tab bars, and windows. This design language will introduce floating menus, rounder buttons, and simplified navigation.
While watchOS already employs rounded app icons and buttons, the Solarium style might be applied to elements such as the app library, notifications, and Control Center. This redesign aims to enhance cross-platform compatibility across Apple’s ecosystem.
In sync with the design updates, Apple is expected to introduce several new watch faces with watchOS 26, reflecting the new style. Moreover, the integration of sleep detection features will leverage Apple Watch’s capabilities. This includes the introduction of sleep pause for AirPods, utilizing Apple Watch data to discern when a user is asleep.
iOS 26 promises a revamp of the native apps, with significant enhancements to Apple’s Health app. Anticipated features include an AI-powered health coach that delivers personalized health insights, leveraging data and functionalities from Apple Watch. This coach may offer expert advice on health conditions, fitness strategies, and lifestyle modifications.
Additionally, Apple is reportedly developing a food tracking feature, allowing users to log dietary intake through their Apple Watch. Another exciting development is the blood pressure tracking capability, expected for 2025 models but potentially previewed with watchOS 26. While it may alert users to hypertension, it won’t provide specific systolic and diastolic readings.
In keeping with tradition, watchOS 26 may introduce new exercise categories and features. Currently, strength training lacks native support, necessitating third-party apps for rep counting.
While Apple Watch lacks the processing power for on-device AI, it benefits from features powered through its iPhone connection. Rumors suggest the addition of AI-powered battery management in iPhones with iOS 26, potentially extending to Apple Watch. This feature aims to optimize battery life by analyzing device usage patterns.
Presently, features like ChatGPT Siri integration and Typing Tools are unavailable on Apple Watch, though they could be future inclusions. Additionally, the Watch does not support notification or content summaries, areas ripe for future development.
Following the WWDC25 event on June 9, Apple is expected to roll out the watchOS 26 developer beta alongside iOS 26. The public beta for watchOS 26 is likely to follow in July, with the final version becoming available to all users. The update will be compatible with the anticipated Apple Watch 11 and Apple Watch Series 3, set to launch with the iPhone 17 series.
