In a groundbreaking shift, Apple has announced a comprehensive overhaul of the version numbering system for its suite of operating systems. This change, unveiled during the keynote at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025, aligns all platforms such as iOS, macOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS with a unified versioning strategy based on the upcoming year, rather than the current one.
For instance, the forthcoming iPhone models set to debut this year will feature iOS 26. Similarly, Mac computers will run on macOS Tahoe 26, iPads on iPadOS 26, Apple Watches on watchOS 26, Apple TVs on tvOS 26, and the Vision Pro mixed reality glasses on visionOS 26. This adjustment is designed to streamline the update process and eradicate the confusion associated with disparate version numbers across Apple’s ecosystem.
Previously, users encountered a hodgepodge of version numbers like iOS 18, watchOS 11, and visionOS 2 all at once, which often led to uncertainty about whether their devices were up-to-date. With the new numbering system, all Apple operating systems will be incremented annually. Therefore, software updates released in 2026 will carry the version number “27.”
This strategic move is not entirely unexpected within tech circles. A report by Bloomberg in late May had hinted at Apple’s intentions to revolutionize its versioning approach. The confirmation at WWDC 2025 has now made these speculations a reality.
