Apple has decided to cancel its much-anticipated scratch-resistant anti-reflective screen coating for the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro models, as reported by MacRumors, which cites reliable sources within the industry.

Apple Scraps Anti-Reflective Coating for iPhone 17 Pro

Earlier this year, rumors surfaced on the Weibo platform, specifically from a user known as Instant Digital, suggesting that Apple was developing an advanced anti-reflective screen layer. This new layer was touted to be more scratch-resistant than the current Ceramic Shield technology.

Challenges in Production

Apple initially planned to introduce this innovative coating exclusively on the premium iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max versions. These models would have marked a significant first for iPhones featuring an anti-reflective display. However, due to production scaling challenges, Apple has decided not to pursue this feature for the iPhone 17 Pro lineup.

Presently, iPhone displays are equipped with a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating, but Apple’s efforts in the realm of anti-reflective technology have been limited. While Apple does offer a glare-reducing nano-textured display option for its Mac and iPad Pro devices, this technology has not been extended to its iPhone series.

It’s conceivable that Apple might be exploring alternative solutions, such as a nano-textured or a more straightforward coating.

Competition Heats Up

Meanwhile, Samsung has made strides with its Galaxy S24 Ultra, which boasts a Gorilla Glass Armor display panel capable of reducing reflections by up to 75%. This advancement enhances contrast under bright lighting conditions and delivers more vivid colors when viewed in sunlight or other high-luminosity environments.
