Revolutionizing Personal Air Travel

As the eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft) market experiences rapid growth, the London-based startup AltoVolo is setting new standards. The company is making waves with its hybrid-electric personal aircraft named Sigma. This innovative vehicle boasts a remarkable range of 821 km and can cruise at speeds of 354 km/h, all while operating at a noise level 80% quieter than traditional helicopters. Despite being introduced only through concept images, Sigma’s visual appeal and impressive claims have sparked industry-wide discussions. AltoVolo’s ambitious targets are noteworthy compared to existing eVTOL projects.

Challenging the Helicopter Market

For context, Archer Aviation’s Midnight model features a maximum speed of 241 km/h and a range of 160 km. Similarly, Joby Aviation’s hydrogen fuel cell prototype is a close competitor, offering a flight range of 840 km and a top speed of 322 km/h. However, Sigma aims for a different market segment. Unlike Archer and Joby, which focus on urban air taxi services, AltoVolo is positioning its product as a challenger to the private helicopter market. With its extended range and quieter operation, Sigma is poised to become a preferred choice for private transportation, especially in areas closer to city centers.

Striking Technical Specifications

The technical specifications of Sigma are as captivating as the promises it carries. Measuring a mere 4.8 meters in width, the aircraft is about the size of a double garage door. Its 1,608 horsepower hybrid powertrain ensures flight continuity even if one system fails. Despite accommodating three passengers, the total weight remains around 980 kg. A standout feature is the patent-pending inclined electric jet design coupled with an integrated aerodynamic system. By leveraging the high instantaneous power output of batteries for take-offs and landings, and utilizing the energy density of liquid fuel for long-distance flights, this hybrid approach aims to optimize both performance and efficiency.

Future Prospects

AltoVolo has announced the completion of prototype flight tests and is on the verge of constructing a full-scale demonstrator model. The pre-order waiting list for Sigma is set to open in July. Whether AltoVolo’s ambitious promises will become a reality remains to be seen.
