Rolls-Royce proudly commemorates the centenary of the Phantom, a quintessential symbol of luxury and opulence. For a century, the Phantom has been synonymous with prestige, accompanying royalty, leaders, and visionaries through pivotal moments in history. This legendary model boasts a legacy deeply woven into the tapestry of contemporary culture.
Since its inception in 1925, the Phantom has epitomized success and elegance, standing as an unrivaled pinnacle of luxury. It has become a beacon of sophistication, influencing and reflecting the personal style and refined taste of its illustrious owners.
To honor this remarkable heritage, Rolls-Royce designers have crafted eight unique artworks to celebrate the Phantom’s centenary. Drawing inspiration from a 1910 commission to Charles Sykes, inventor of the Spirit of Ecstasy, these artworks depict the Phantom in various settings that mirror the opulent lifestyles of its elite clientele across the decades.
As we celebrate the Phantom’s centenary, we revisit its glorious past and the captivating stories it has been part of. Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, a distinguished commander during World War II, was known for his Spartan lifestyle. Yet, he chose two Phantom IIIs as his preferred mode of transport, symbolizing reliability and steadfastness to his troops during the tumultuous war era.
In June 1944, amidst the D-Day preparations, Monty utilized one of his Phantoms to ferry Winston Churchill, General Eisenhower, and King George VI to strategic meetings. Post-war, his other Phantom served to transport Prime Ministers from across the Commonwealth.
Beyond the battlefield, the Phantom has graced royal palaces, particularly in the UK. In 1948, the Duke of Edinburgh commissioned a bespoke Phantom IV, built under the codename “Maharajah of Nabha,” following his marriage to HRH Princess Elizabeth. This vehicle marked the beginning of a royal tradition, with subsequent orders for Phantom IVs, Phantom Vs, and Phantom VIs to serve the British monarchy.
A standout among these is the Silver Jubilee Phantom VI, presented in 1977 to honor Queen Elizabeth II’s 25th year on the throne. This iconic vehicle later played a role in the 2011 royal wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, transporting the bride to Westminster Abbey.
The Phantom’s influence extends globally, like in 1966 when a Phantom V was delivered to Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE. This vehicle was pivotal during the country’s formation ceremonies, symbolizing unity and new beginnings.
Diplomats worldwide have embraced the Phantom as a status symbol, with British ambassadors using it to signify their presence and authority across major global capitals. Sir John Fretwell, former British Ambassador to Paris, noted its impact, stating, “My Rolls-Royce certainly helped when I visited the Élysée Palace.”
The Phantom has left an indelible mark on pop culture and Hollywood. John Lennon, celebrating The Beatles’ success, commissioned a unique all-black Phantom V in 1964, which later became an iconic symbol of the 1967 Summer of Love with its vibrant, artistic repaint.
Hollywood luminaries like Jack Warner, Fred Astaire, and Greta Garbo were among the early adopters of the Phantom. The vehicle’s cinematic presence was highlighted in films like “Goldfinger” and “The Yellow Rolls-Royce,” cementing its status as a cultural icon.
The introduction of the Phantom VII in the early 2000s coincided with a new era of self-made success and global celebrity culture. The car became a means for the new elite to showcase both their achievements and individuality, resonating with audiences on platforms like Instagram and YouTube.
Today, the Phantom VIII continues this tradition of excellence and bespoke craftsmanship, with each new order adding to its storied legacy.
