The Rise of Artificial Intelligence and Energy Demand

The growing dominance of artificial intelligence is significantly increasing the pressure on data centers, which are crucial for delivering this technology to the masses. As a result, while the construction of new data centers continues, alternative methods to fulfill their energy requirements are being actively explored. Among these alternatives, nuclear energy is particularly noteworthy. Consequently, both corporations and governments are revisiting nuclear energy investments.

The Rise of Artificial Intelligence and Energy Demand

Google’s Commitment to Nuclear Energy

Google stands out as one of the key players investing in nuclear energy, aiming to augment the nuclear facilities that will power its data centers. Last October, Google forged a partnership with Kairos Power, announcing plans to achieve 500 megawatts (MW) of nuclear energy capacity through the deployment of small modular reactors (SMR). This initiative marked Google’s first significant step towards sustainable energy solutions.

New Partnerships and Future Plans

Building on this momentum, Google recently inked an agreement with Elementl Power to develop additional nuclear facilities. Under this agreement, Elementl Power, backed by Google’s financial support, will identify and prepare potential sites for three new nuclear plants across the United States. Each plant is expected to boast an installed capacity of 600 MW. While specific investment figures and site locations remain undisclosed, this collaboration underscores Google’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

The Industry-Wide Shift to Nuclear Energy

Elementl Power’s ambitious goal is to elevate its total nuclear energy capacity to a staggering 10 gigawatts by 2035. Alongside Google, tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta are also making significant strides toward harnessing nuclear energy. These similar agreements highlight a broader industry trend, suggesting that the involvement of Silicon Valley could lead to rapid expansion in nuclear energy capacity in the coming years.
