Google has announced a significant update for the YouTube application on iOS, which could present challenges for users with older iPhone models. The updated app now mandates that devices must be running iOS 16 or a more recent version. Previously, the app was compatible with devices operating on iOS 15.
Impact on Older iPhone and iPad Models
This updated requirement means that a number of older iPhone models can no longer support the latest version of the YouTube app. Specifically, owners of the iPhone 6S/6S Plus, iPhone 7/7 Plus, and the 1st generation iPhone SE will find their devices incompatible. On the iPad front, the 2nd generation iPad Air and 4th generation iPad Mini are also excluded from compatibility with the new app version.
Continuing Access to YouTube on Older Devices
Despite this update, users with older devices shouldn’t worry about losing access to YouTube. While they won’t be able to install the latest version, version 20.22.1, YouTube will still function on these devices. However, users should be aware that they will miss out on new features and enhancements that come with future updates. Alternatively, YouTube can still be accessed via the web at m.youtube.com, though the experience may not be as seamless as using the app.
