WhatsApp is set to discontinue its services on a range of older iPhone and Android devices as of 1 June 2025. This decision aligns with their ongoing strategy to enhance app performance and bolster security. Initially, this update was intended for May 2025, but Meta has slightly postponed it, providing users additional time to adapt.
Devices Losing WhatsApp Support in 2025
From June 2025, WhatsApp will no longer be functional on iPhones operating iOS 15 or earlier and on Android phones using Android 5.0 and below. Below is the detailed list of impacted models:
While these devices are deemed outdated, WhatsApp advises users to verify their current software versions. Devices running at least iOS 15.1 or Android 5.1 will remain compatible with the app. If your device is eligible for a software update, installing it will allow continued use of WhatsApp. Additionally, users are encouraged to back up their chats through Settings – Chats – Chat Backup.
The primary reason for ending support on older systems is to address security vulnerabilities. Devices that are no longer receiving regular updates from Apple or Android are more susceptible to cybersecurity threats. As WhatsApp continues to roll out new features to safeguard user data, maintaining support for outdated systems becomes increasingly challenging and risky.
