WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that empowers users with more control over how they download media content. Following extensive testing since April, this feature is now accessible to a select group of users through the beta version 2.25.18.11 for Android. A broader rollout is anticipated in the coming weeks.
The feature introduces a new “Automatic download quality” option within the “Settings > Storage and data” menu. This allows users to specify the download quality for photos and videos, offering two choices: standard quality and HD quality.
Opting for standard quality automatically downloads a compressed version of the file, optimizing storage by minimizing space usage. Conversely, selecting HD quality ensures that the high-resolution version is transferred to the device. A noteworthy aspect of this feature is that when media is sent in HD, WhatsApp uploads both the standard and HD versions simultaneously to its servers. This is necessary due to end-to-end encryption, which precludes WhatsApp from altering the media. Even if recipients choose to receive the standard quality, they retain the option to manually access the HD version directly from the chat screen.
This feature not only offers users control over their storage management but also enhances the quality of the content received. WhatsApp’s latest enhancement is aimed at offering a more versatile and user-centric experience in media sharing.
