iOS 26, the latest mobile operating system for iPhone smartphones, was officially unveiled by Apple at the WWDC 2025 event. This release marks a pivotal moment in mobile technology with a host of groundbreaking features.
The most transformative redesign since iOS 7, Liquid Glass introduces Apple’s new universal design language. Inspired by VisionOS, Liquid Glass offers a seamless, dynamic interface that adapts to various user interactions. Rounded corners complement the curved displays, and the translucent material behaves like real glass, providing a fluid user experience. This design innovation extends across all apps and system interfaces, from notifications to the control center, creating a cohesive and intuitive user journey. Apps are now rendered with Liquid Glass layers, allowing for personalization in light or dark mode, and a new transparent aesthetic for icons.
The Lock Screen now features dynamic watch resizing based on available space in background images. It intelligently adjusts to highlight the best parts of photos, even when notifications appear. A new 3D effect animates 2D photos as the phone moves, and the lock screen can synchronize with music to display album covers in real-time.
A new camera mode simplifies setting adjustments with intuitive swipes, maintaining a full-frame view to enhance the photography experience.
The Photos app introduces Library and Collections tabs, alongside the ability to create 3D spatial photos that enhance the visual experience on both the Lock Screen and within the app itself.
The Phone app now presents voicemails and missed calls in a unified view, similar to text messages. Integrated Call Screening allows silent call handling from unknown numbers, only alerting users when callers identify themselves. The Hold Assist feature automates hold music detection, maintaining the call while allowing users to multitask, and notifying them when a live agent is available.
Messages introduces dynamic backgrounds for group chats, bringing a personalized touch with photos and dynamic effects. The Image Playground generates images and suggests polls, enhanced by spelling indicators in group chats. Live Translate offers real-time translations within Messages, FaceTime, and phone calls, powered by on-device Apple models.
The Maps app now intelligently remembers user routines and preferred routes, providing timely notifications for alternative routes when delays occur. The Places Visited feature logs visited locations, allowing easy deletion and ensuring privacy with end-to-end encryption.
The new Games app centralizes gaming experiences, offering personalized recommendations, Apple Arcade access, and features like multiplayer challenges and friend comparisons within Game Center.
Visual Intelligence showcases enhanced capabilities, offering real-time information about surroundings and app content. New tools for screenshots include Image Search, calendar integration, and a ChatGPT-powered Ask feature, streamlining actions and inquiries across apps.
iOS 26 is set to launch as a complimentary update for compatible iPhone models in the fall, ushering in a new era of mobile innovation.
