Triumphant Test of Turkey’s Homegrown SOM-B1 Cruise Missile
The long-range cruise missile SOM, a remarkable innovation by TÜBİTAK SAGE, has successfully struck its intended target with exceptional precision during a test firing, showcasing its capability with an indigenously developed turbojet engine.
Direct Hit by SOM-B1 Featuring Domestic Turbojet
The SOM-B1 cruise missile, a product of TÜBİTAK SAGE innovation and manufactured by ROKETSAN, is driven by Turkey’s pioneering turbojet engine, the KTJ-3200, crafted by Kale Jet Engines. This engine not only powers SOM but also the Atmaca cruise missiles. In its maiden test under this setup, the SOM-B1 demonstrated unparalleled accuracy by hitting the target precisely.
In a statement, Mehmet Fatih Kacır, the Minister of Industry and Technology, expressed his enthusiasm: “SOM, a symbol of our national pride, has achieved full precision in its test firing with its native turbojet engine. This advancement signifies a major stride within the National Technology Move, embodying the dedication of thousands of engineers and technicians, the relentless passion of our scientists, and the limitless aspirations of our youth. Adding to the commendations, Haluk Görgün, President of the Presidency of Defense Industries, remarked: “The successful test firing of SOM, utilizing a domestic turbojet engine, is a landmark technological triumph and a significant leap towards realizing the goal of an independent Turkey. This accomplishment reflects years of collective effort, tireless ingenuity, and unwavering commitment to the vision of a ‘Fully Independent Defense Industry’.”
Murat İkinci, CEO of ROKETSAN, highlighted the missile’s potential: “With its superior features and exceptional performance compared to its counterparts, SOM will serve as a substantial force multiplier for our Air Force, capable of executing missions effectively both day and night, powered by its indigenous turbojet engine.”
