Samsung and the GSMA have forged a strategic partnership to facilitate the seamless global adoption of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology. This initiative is set to revolutionize connectivity as Samsung plans to enable VoLTE by default on all its smartphones and tablets equipped with Android 15-based One UI 7.0. Consequently, all devices receiving this update or launched with this version will have VoLTE activated by default.
Most Samsung Galaxy smartphones introduced recently, including the latest Galaxy S25 series, are already equipped to support VoLTE connectivity. However, users have traditionally had to activate this feature manually. This proactive shift to default activation is crucial as telecom operators worldwide transition away from legacy 2G and 3G networks, embracing the more advanced 4G and 5G networks.
Through this collaboration, Samsung leverages the GSMA’s Network Settings Exchange (NSX) and Interoperability Testing services, ensuring VoLTE is automatically enabled. Supported devices will utilize operator-defined IMS settings via NSX or default to GSMA Profile #4 when necessary.
According to the GSMA, NSX serves as a centralized platform that standardizes the distribution of mobile network settings from operators to device manufacturers (OEMs) globally. This platform allows Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) to upload, manage, and disseminate the latest network settings efficiently. By employing GSMA NSX, network operators can share IMS-specific settings with device manufacturers, ensuring service benefits and seamless interoperability. Devices can henceforth be preset according to each operator’s shared network configurations.
Additionally, the GSMA’s enhanced Interoperability Testing service provides a comprehensive suite of validation tools, guaranteeing operator-device compatibility for VoLTE prior to commercial deployment.
