Renowned for their captivating narratives and engaging mechanics in the Like A Dragon and Yakuza series, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has unveiled their latest project, now officially titled ‘Stranger Than Heaven’. Originally teased as Project Century at The Game Awards in 2024, the game was officially named during the Summer Game Fest 2025.
Although the release date remains under wraps, Stranger Than Heaven is anticipated for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series platforms. Set in the 1940s, the game immerses players in an era dominated by jazz music, iconic trench coats, and classic automobiles. Players can explore the richly detailed Sotenbori region, a fictional area inspired by real-life Dotonbori in Osaka, Japan, first introduced in Yakuza 2.
Originally hinted to begin in 1915, the narrative now appears to span several decades, culminating in the year 1943 amidst the backdrop of World War II. This suggests an expansive timeline, promising a deep and evolving storyline. The protagonist, Daito, is seen engaging in combat throughout the game. Notably, the game introduces a moral choice system, allowing players to decide whether to show mercy to enemies.
In a climactic moment of the trailer, Daito encounters a Western character, revealing an intriguing facet of his identity: his Western heritage, highlighted by striking blue eyes. This encounter hints at deeper layers of character development and story.
