US-based energy firm Holtec International is embarking on a groundbreaking initiative to breathe new life into decommissioned nuclear power plants across the United States using small modular reactors (SMRs). The company has set its sights on deploying its innovative SMR-300 reactors at Michigan’s Palisades nuclear power plant site by 2030. In collaboration with Hyundai Engineering & Construction, Holtec plans to establish a fleet of SMR-300 reactors totaling 10 gigawatts throughout North America during the 2030s.
Revitalizing Retired Plants Holtec is making strides towards the reactivation of the 800 megawatt Palisades nuclear power plant, which was decommissioned in 2022. This ambitious move underlines the company’s confidence in the plant’s operational potential. By installing two SMR-300 units on the existing site, Holtec aims to not only bring the plant back to life but also introduce state-of-the-art, safe, and efficient nuclear power technology. The company asserts that leveraging existing facilities for SMR installations will be more cost-effective compared to developing entirely new sites.
Expanding SMR Deployment Beyond Palisades, Holtec has announced plans to construct four SMR units at the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant. These new SMRs are intended to succeed the 625-megawatt reactor at Oyster Creek, which is slated for decommissioning by 2029. Moreover, Holtec envisions the deployment of a total of 4 gigawatts of SMR-300 capacity across various US regions, with particular focus on Utah and Wyoming, by the 2030s.
Holtec’s SMR-300 reactor represents a new era in nuclear power with its Gen 3+ design, centered around pressurized light water technology and equipped with cutting-edge passive safety systems. Each SMR-300 unit is capable of producing 300 megawatts of electricity, sufficient to power approximately 300,000 homes. A standout feature of the reactor is its reliance on the natural force of gravity to drive safety systems, ensuring a secure shutdown process without the need for operator intervention.
