On the eve of Republic Day, celebrated annually on June 2 to commemorate Italy’s transition from a monarchy to a republic in 1946 following World War II, President Sergio Mattarella hosted a reception at the Quirinale Palace. The event featured diplomatic representatives from various countries and international organizations accredited to Italy.
During his speech, President Mattarella expressed hope for an immediate opening of corridors by Israel to facilitate the delivery of international aid to Gaza. Condemning an entire population, from children to the elderly, to starvation is inhumane, he remarked, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian assistance.
Mattarella also highlighted the ongoing erosion of Palestinian territories as a significant issue, stating, “Palestinians are entitled to their own homeland within specific and defined borders.” He strongly criticized the refusal to apply humanitarian laws to the people of Gaza, deeming it unacceptable.
Additionally, he urged for the immediate release of Israeli captives.
Turning his attention to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, President Mattarella expressed his solidarity with Ukraine, which has been bravely resisting Russian aggression for more than three years. He reaffirmed Italy’s unwavering and resolute support for Kyiv, stating, “We remain committed to achieving a just, inclusive, and lasting peace.”
