According to the Israeli state television, KAN, Shmulik Friedman, the Jerusalem District Commander of the Israeli fire brigade, announced that they are currently engaged in combatting one of the largest fires in the nation’s history.
In a press conference, Friedman stressed, “We are amidst a very significant forest fire, possibly the largest ever witnessed in this country.”
Highlighting the challenges faced, Friedman noted that the Israeli fire brigade is still “very far” from gaining control over the fires and the cause of the blaze remains undetermined.
Evacuations and International Assistance
Due to the extensive fires that erupted today in the Ashtaol Forest located between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, five residential areas have been evacuated to ensure the safety of the inhabitants.
International Aid Sought
Israel has reached out for international support to tackle the fires, requesting assistance from six countries, including Greece, Croatia, Italy, and the Greek Cypriot Administration.
The Israeli fire department is utilizing 12 firefighting aircraft and deploying 50 rescue and firefighting teams in a concerted effort to bring the rapidly spreading blaze under control, exacerbated by strong winds.
