A group of plaintiffs, including Prince Harry, allege that for the past three decades, journalists have been involved in the illegal tapping of phones, bugging of homes, and acquiring of personal medical records through deceitful means. These allegations extend to several current newspaper editors and press executives.
Associated Newspapers (ANL) has firmly rejected these accusations, labeling Prince Harry’s claims as “exaggerated and baseless.”
David Sherborne, representing the plaintiffs, stated that the two-day hearing focuses on the presentation and examination of evidence in preparation for the main trial anticipated next year. Sherborne mentioned that investigations have revealed indications of widespread illegal information gathering by newspapers, but the extent remains partially undisclosed due to insufficient documentation.
On the other hand, ANL’s legal team argued that the plaintiffs, including Prince Harry, have yet to present concrete evidence supporting their allegations.
In a recent development, Prince Harry faced a setback in his lawsuit concerning the loss of his automatic right to police protection in the UK. Residing in California with his wife Meghan and their two children, Harry expressed being “devastated” by this ruling.
In a conversation with the BBC, Prince Harry revealed that his father, King Charles, ceased communication with him, attributing this estrangement to ongoing security issues. He also disclosed that King Charles is undergoing cancer treatment, expressing concern about his father’s limited time.
Following the court’s decision, Harry issued a written statement recalling how his mother, Princess Diana, was similarly targeted by media and royal circles, and he claims that his family now faces a comparable campaign of animosity.
Buckingham Palace has opted not to comment on Harry’s allegations regarding security or his statements, noting that the matter has undergone rigorous scrutiny by the courts.
