Lebanese Citizens Cast Votes in First Local Elections in Nearly Ten Years

After a tumultuous decade marked by conflict, Lebanese citizens are participating in local elections for the first time since the cessation of hostilities between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah. The elections follow a ceasefire agreement, paving the way for this democratic exercise.

The initial phase of voting commenced on Sunday, covering the Mount Lebanon districts, including the war-torn southern suburbs of Beirut. This area is notable for housing Hezbollah’s headquarters and was once home to their long-standing leader, Hassan Nasrallah, who perished in Israeli airstrikes.

While these elections are for municipal councils and mayors, and are less significant than the upcoming parliamentary elections slated for 2026, they serve as an important indicator of political sentiment post-war, especially in the south where Hezbollah and its allies maintain substantial influence.

In the southern suburbs of Beirut, Hezbollah and the Shiite Amal Movement are anticipated to secure the majority of votes. The parties’ presence was felt strongly, with flags and supporters dressed in green and yellow guiding voters at polling stations.

Voting took place in public schools, many of which are situated near the ruins left by Israeli airstrikes. Lebanon’s government, facing financial constraints, is urgently seeking international aid for reconstruction, with the World Bank estimating costs exceeding €9.7 billion.

The municipal elections had been postponed thrice previously, primarily due to budgetary limitations. Voters expressed that their primary concerns are restoring their homes and rebuilding their communities.

Mohammad Awali, a candidate for the Haret Hreik municipality, emphasized the pressing need for effective local governance, stating, “Our local council shoulders immense responsibility, especially in light of the widespread destruction our region has endured.”
