On May 13, during The Android Show: I/O Edition, Google officially revealed Android 16’s new design language. The eagerly awaited operating system, set to debut on Pixel devices later this year, now has a more definite release timeline.
Google is set to launch the Android 16 update earlier than the usual timeline. Unlike the traditional fall schedule, the update will be released on Tuesday, June 3, 2025. Initially, the update will be available for Pixel phones and tablets. This shift in schedule is not merely a strategic move by Google. Manufacturers need time to adapt their interfaces to the latest Android version. Companies like Samsung and Xiaomi aim to include the newest Android iteration, particularly in their flagship models launched early in the year. By releasing the update earlier, Google facilitates smoother integration into manufacturers’ product launch timelines.
The Android 16 update is expected to be available via OTA (over-the-air) for Pixel devices starting next Tuesday. Pixel phone and tablet users can easily download and install the update through the Settings app.
Android 16 introduces several remarkable features alongside system-wide enhancements. Lock screen widgets, which were phased out after Android 5, make a comeback, allowing users to access frequently used information without unlocking their screens. Additionally, Google has improved multitasking tools, especially benefiting foldable phones and tablets.
Moreover, some artificial intelligence features showcased at the Google I/O 2025 event have been integrated into Android 16. Pixel users can verify compatibility with Android 16 by consulting the official support list.
